What Does A School Counselor Do?

We have often been asked, “What does a school counselor do?” This is actually a great question!

Today’s school counselors are involved in many different aspects of students’ lives. The first experience many students have with us is when they have a question about their schedule. While we are responsible for scheduling, we also work with students in many different areas of high school life such as:

Improving Grades, Working with teachers, Selecting appropriate courses, Applying to college, Choosing a career, Managing stress, Getting along with peers, Grief and Loss, Family Changes, Career Related Learning and Graduation Requirements.

These are just some of the areas in which school counselors are able to help aid in the academic, personal/social, and career growth of their students. If there is a topic we forgot to list above, you can be fairly sure that we most likely have dealt with that as well.  Basically, we are here to help make high school as supportive and productive as we can for our students. From improving study skills to selecting a college, we have resources to meet the needs of each individual student.

The counseling department has an open door policy for students to stop by anytime. We also enjoy getting to know families and encourage parents to drop by, call or email us anytime. We look forward to working with you and your student.
